THE BRONX ALUMNAE CHAPTER HOSTS 39TH ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP AFFAIR IN DERBY STYLE

On Sunday, May 4, 2025, the Bronx Alumnae Chapter hosted its 39th annual scholarship affair, the Bronx Derby Brunch. Taking place at the Pelham Bay & Split Rock Golf courses, the sold out event was themed after the Kentucky Derby and was filled with guests adorned in floral and vibrant attire, a horse and pony show, and activities that included violinist performances, a DJ dance party, cornhole and caricature drawings. Door prizes were awarded to a dozen winners and trophies were given to the best dressed male and female attendees.

When asked about the occasion, the fundraising chairs, Astere Yemmer-Brown and Yvonette Powell, said “Our goal was to create a memorable experience that brings the community together while raising critical funds to support our scholarship recipients. We are incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support and are proud of our Chapter for continuing to invest in the future of our youth.”

The brunch focused on raising funds for Bronx high school students who are attending their first year in college. This year, Ms. Amaiah Durant received the four-year scholarship and was honored during the luncheon. On the decision to choose her as this year’s award recipient, Amaiah said “being selected for this scholarship means the world to me. I have always believed that a great education should never be a financial burden, and the Bronx Alumnae Chapter not only understands that belief—they understood me.” Ms. Durant is also a participant in the chapter’s Delta G.E.M.S. mentoring program for young ladies between the ages of 14-18.

The event was attended by Delta dignitaries, and leaders from across the county including the Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson. All proceeds will go toward scholarship funds for future Bronx students attending college. Applications are available annually from November through February. Ms. Wendy Brown, who serves as the 18th president of the chapter, stated “I want to thank each of you for your support as we continue our legacy by “Servicing Bronx Communities through public services and impactful partnerships.”
