The 2020 Scholar Spotlight shines on the
2016 Bronx Alumnae Scholarship recipient – Kayla W.
Kayla is a new graduate of Occidental College (Oxy) with a Bachelor of Arts in Urban and Environmental Policy & a minor in Education. While at Oxy, she had the opportunity to serve as coordinator of the Education in Action (EIA) program, teach public health in South Central Los Angeles, provide educational justice in West Hollywood, and study abroad for a semester in Rwanda, Africa – her most memorable experience to date.
Although she just completed her undergraduate studies, Kayla is not limiting her pursuit of higher education to a bachelor’s degree. Coming this fall, she will be teaching secondary English in Dallas, TX while pursuing her master’s in education.
Kayla states how grateful she is for the monetary contribution the Bronx Alumnae Chapter’s Scholarship has played within her college experience. “This scholarship has done much more than help me pay for those things [flights, books, etc]. It helped me feel more secure financially which allowed me to explore all that college could offer me.”
On May 2, 2020 Bronx Alumnae was set to host our annual Scholarship Luncheon. Unfortunately, COVID-19 put a halt to the festivities. Instead, we wish to send a virtual shout out ALL the graduates of the Class of 2020! Your tenacity during these unprecedented times will only fortify the great people you are destined to be.
